In this class you will extend your skills in advanced film development to understand what happens when you pull and push film and develop accordingly to extend and contract tonal ranges. We will assess already-completed results of this technique and discuss how this can be used with B&W 35mm film.

You will then go on to explore an advanced paper development technique using the split filter printing method which allows you to gain more information from a negative that is otherwise challenging to print from. You will put this into practice using negatives that are familiar to you to achieve an image with a greater tonal range. We also discuss another technique, flashing, which is a method to gain more information in the highlights.

To finish off the day, we will get more creative and explore the ‘Solarisation’ technique to alter the look of an image to one with emphasised edges and reversed tones. An image which has strong lines is very helpful with technique.

Please contact us if you have any questions at all.

Prerequisites

You need to already be familiar with the darkroom and basic printing as this one day workshop is intended to extend your skills with the crafting of the fine print.

Materials

Please bring along a good stock of photographic paper such R/C pearl, a range of negatives that you’ve found challenging to print from (if unsure, please contact the CCP) and negatives you would like to experiment with creatively.
