This course is designed to extend your existing, intermediate knowledge and appreciation of “in camera” imaging, and the conceptual development of your photographs. You will discover tangential ways of developing your ideas, and learn to think outside the square. Conversant camera knowledge would be most helpful for participants in this workshop.

For his entire artistic career, Ervin has enjoyed creating images “in camera”. Ervin has continued experimenting with and refining these processes, even as he has embraced digital technology. He has a hands-on, rather than digital, approach to creating and manipulating images. These in-camera processes lend themselves to images that are at once more “real”, and also impressionistic/expressionistic. Ervin’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

In this masterclass you will learn photographic design, pre-visualisation, different ways of working and playing with images, and most importantly, “STICKY TAPE TECHNOLOGY”! The emphasis will be on personal expression. Ervin engenders a shoot from the hip attitude for all students in this workshop. You will discover that you do not need a lot of equipment to be able to develop your work further; rather a sense of documented experimentation will be encouraged.

Prerequisites:

You should possess intermediate camera knowledge. A fundamental understanding of photography (i.e. “Crash Course Camera”) and some basic lighting experience will be assumed.

Required Materials:

Please have your lunch, DSLR (preferably equipped with a medium zoom lens), a tripod, plus a notebook and pen. Bring along some electronic images you are already very familiar with to this workshop - if unsure, please call the CCP.

About the Artist:

Ervin Janek is process driven, realising that his thematic concerns always find their way into his art.

Apart from finalisation for printing (contrast, sizing and spotting), he does not use digital software to create his images. They are worked entirely in camera, through long and/or double exposures, and re-photographing projections (in negative and positive), often after working into the projections with paint, pastel, cut paper, found and created objects.

Thematically he is interested in our connection and interconnection with nature and each other, and the consequences of our disrespect for, and ignorance of, this fact. Degradation of our environment, degradation of other human beings, war, hostility and greed, as well as his personal (troubled) biography are all involved and reflected in his work, as is beauty, love, happiness, and the search for truth.
