ABOUT AUSTRALASIA’S TOP EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHERS

Now in its 14th year, Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers is the region’s largest and most prestigious competition for early career and aspiring photographers. In 2022, a prize pool worth over $30,000 is up for grabs, including $9,000 in cash.

Winners and runners-up, as well as a selection of the top entries in each category will be published in a special Australasia's Top Emerging Photographers edition of Capture magazine in May 2022.

WHO CAN ENTER?

Australasia's Top Emerging Photographers is open to Australians and New Zealanders with less than four years' professional photography experience, including amateurs.

The competition is open to citizens and residents of Australia and New Zealand.

IMAGE CREATION DATE RESTRICTIONS

With COVID-19 restrictions making it challenging for photographers to get out and shoot new work, we’ve relaxed the creation-date restrictions. You can enter images created on or after 1 January 2019. However, you cannot enter images that have previously been entered in Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers.

STANDARD
$35 (Monday 6 December 2021 to Sunday 30 January 2022)

LAST MINUTE
$39 (Monday 31 January 2022 to Sunday 20 February 2022)

All pricing is in Australian dollars (AUD).

PORTFOLIO AND SINGLE-IMAGE CATEGORIES

Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers has eight portfolio categories and one single-image category.

Portfolio categories

The following categories require the submissions of a portfolio:

  • ANIMAL (3 images)

  • ARCHITECTURE (3 images)

  • ART (3 images)

  • BLACK & WHITE (3 images)

  • DOCUMENTARY (5 images)

  • LANDCAPE (3 images)

  • OPEN (3 images)

  • PORTRAIT (3 images)

Judges are looking for portfolios that work together cohesively as a series. You should aim to submit images that relate to each other on some level, whether it be aesthetically, thematically, or something else that ties the images together. You can find tips from our judges on how to improve your chances in the competition here.

IMAGE PREPARATION

• Images must be in JPEG (.jpg) format (High Quality or Maximum Quality). Do not submit TIFF, PSD, DNG, or other file formats.
• Images must be at least 2,700 pixels on the longest side.
• Individual images must be no larger than 5MB.
• Image file names should not include unusual characters such as !, @, ", ', #, $, %, ^, &, *, (, ), ©. These characters can result in images not uploading properly. Hyphens (-) and underscores (_) are fine. If you find that one or more of your images has not uploaded correctly, please e-mail us at: [email protected]
• Please ensure images are free of text and logos. This includes watermarks and added text. Images with text or watermarks will not be shortlisted.
• You may enter multiple categories, and/or the same category multiple times.

IMAGE MANIPULATION

JUDGES

Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers will be judged by a panel of leading photographers from Australia and around the world.

PRIZES

In 2022 the total prize pool for Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers is valued at more than $30,000. It comprises over $20,000 in prizes from our sponsors and cash prizes of $9,000. Click here for more details.

RECOGNITION

Winners, runners-up, and top-ranked portfolios will be revealed in the May-June-July 2022 edition of Capture magazine. A simultaneous announcement will be made at www.capturemag.com.au. Also in May, Winners, Runners-up, Top 10, Top 20, Top 30, Highly Commended, and Commended photographers will be notified via e-mail of their placing in the competition, and will also receive an award logo (below) that they can publish online and on social media.
